Causeway documentation

Causeway is a trading layer for tokenized real-world assets: stocks, ETFs and commodities. It lets you buy and sell them from the blockchain and wallet you already use, without bridging funds yourself.

Today, each tokenized asset usually lives on a single chain. If your stablecoins are on another chain, you have to bridge, get a new gas token and often a new wallet before you can trade. Causeway removes those steps. You sign one order on your chain; Causeway routes it to wherever the liquidity is and settles the asset back to you.

Causeway does not issue assets. Tokenized assets are issued and backed by licensed third-party issuers. Causeway is the routing and trading layer on top.

How a trade works

Connect. Connect a supported wallet on any supported chain.
Quote. Pick an asset and amount. Causeway shows one price that already includes routing.
Sign. You sign a single order (an intent). You don't sign separate bridge or swap transactions.
Route and fill. Solvers compete to fill your order using liquidity on any supported chain.
Settle. The asset arrives in your wallet on the chain you traded from. Selling works the same way in reverse.

Wallets: browser and mobile wallets on each chain. USB hardware wallets are not supported at launch.

Markets

Three asset classes are planned:

Stocks: tokenized shares of major US companies.
ETFs: index and sector funds in a single token.
Commodities: tokens backed by gold, silver and other reserves.

The final list of markets depends on issuer partnerships and will be published before launch.

Architecture

Causeway has five layers. Each one does one job.

Interface: The web app and wallet connection on each supported chain.
Intent layer: Turns your order into a signed intent: what you pay, what you want, your limits and a deadline.
Solvers: Independent fillers compete to fill each intent at the best price. If nobody fills within your limits, nothing executes.
Cross-chain messaging: Carries verified order and settlement messages between chains.
Liquidity router: Finds and splits fills across pools on different chains.

Order lifecycle

Status	What it means
Signed	Your intent is signed and submitted.
Routed	A solver accepted it and is moving it to the best venue.
Filled	The trade executed within your price limit.
Settled	The asset is in your wallet on your chain.
Expired	Nobody filled it before the deadline. Your funds never left your wallet.

Fees

Final fees will be published before mainnet. Every quote will show the full cost up front: the trading fee, the routing cost and network gas. The fee shown in the preview app is a placeholder.

Risks

Issuer risk. Each token depends on its issuer holding the real asset.
Smart contract risk. Contracts may contain bugs, even after audits.
Cross-chain risk. Messaging between chains can be delayed or fail.
Market risk. Prices move, including when traditional markets are closed.
Regulatory risk. Rules on tokenized securities differ by country and can change.

Eligibility

Who can trade depends on local law and each issuer's own requirements. Some assets may be unavailable in some countries. Supported regions will be listed before launch.

Glossary

Tokenized asset: A blockchain token that represents a real asset, such as one share of a stock.
Intent: A signed order that says what you want, not how to get it.
Solver: A party that competes to fill intents.
Settlement: The final delivery of the asset to your wallet.
Bridging: Moving tokens from one chain to another. Causeway does this for you.
